Students of Vajrayana Should Uphold the Samaya Precepts

2012年9月22日,法王盧師尊蓮生活佛於西雅圖雷藏寺餐廳午膳畢,由於深深關心弟子戒行,特別開示密教戒律重點如下:
On the 22nd of September 2012, Dharma King Living Buddha Liansheng, out of his concern for his students, delivered a special discourse on the importance of Vajrayana precepts after lunch at the Seattle Temple.
一、就師尊而言,對任何眾生,實無分別。然而,真佛行者修行深淺自有不同,凡是對於叛離傳承之人,行者不可與之交往,甚至交談亦不超過三句話,以免受其不正之念影響。
1. While all sentient beings are equal in the eyes of Grandmaster, True Buddha practitioners are at different levels in their levels of cultivation. Hence, students are not allowed to associate with those who have abandoned the lineage, and should not even engage in conversation with any of them for more than three sentences, so as to avoid being affected by their negative thoughts.
二、密教有「十四大戒」甚至更有「十六戒」,有「事師法五十頌」等戒律,以後應該發戒律給新求皈依者,明白之後再求皈依。
2. There are 14 major precepts, and even 16 major precepts, as well as the Fifty Stanzas of Guru Devotion in Vajrayana. In the future, these precepts should be communicated and made understood to anyone prior to him taking refuge.
三、密教行者對於根本上師的衣帽,都不可觸犯。根本上師的床不可踏、坐。弟子不可足踏師影。不可於背後議論、妄測師父的境界。
3. Vajrayana practitioners should not touch the clothing of the root guru. They should not step upon or sit on the bed of the root guru, and no student should step on the shadow of the guru, talk behind his back, and attempt to speculate about the spiritual level of his master.
四、昔日西藏赤松德真王,因故驅逐自己的根本上師──蓮華生大士,甚至派兵追殺。赤松德真王還以芥子咒術釋放蓮師所鎮住在湖中的紅牛魔。於是紅牛魔轉世成為赤松德真王之孫,掌權當王後滅佛,終令興盛一時的西藏王朝湮滅。可見,叛離自己的根本傳承,亦會導致滅國的業報。
4. In the past, King Trisong Detsen of Tibet once expelled his own root guru Padmasambhava, even attempting to take his life by sending troops after him. King Trisong Detsen even set free a red bull demon who was locked up within a lake by the use of incantations and spells, who later incarnated as King Trisong Detsen’s grandson. When the grandson rose to power as king, he eradicated all presence of Buddhism [in Tibet], which eventually led to the decline of the Tibetan kingdom. It goes to show that anyone who abandons his root lineage shall invite a karma such as the annihilation of an empire.

5. A past rule of Vajrayana states that if a student read any book that his guru did not specifically approve of or instruct him to read, it would be a breach of the precepts. There are also other Vajrayana precepts to uphold. Grandmaster is liberal and democratic in his approach, and shall accept the student’s repentance once he understands he has broken such precepts.
六、昔日阿底峽尊者在印尼占碑參見金洲大師欲求法,大師觀察他一年才答應傳法。所以師尊說:「當初弟子要皈依師父前,彼此應該互審其器。(彼此應該觀 察)。」行者一旦離開自己的師父,不管師父如何,皆不可批評。因為,當初皈依師父,就必須守「三昧耶戒」誓盟。妄自批評師父,即為犯戒。
6. In the past, Atisha met Serlingpa in Jambi, Indonesia and requested transmission of teachings. However, Serlingpa observed Atisha for a year before agreeing to give him the transmission. Hence, Grandmaster says, “Prior to taking refuge with the guru, it is important that the guru and student observe each other for assessment. Any practitioner who leaves his guru, regardless of his guru’s conduct, should avoid criticizing him, for the student must adhere to the samaya pledge upon taking refuge, and any attempt to criticize his guru is a breach of the precepts.
七、即使守戒清嚴第一的行者,都輸給一心侍奉根本上師的侍者。即使侍者無暇修法,都得到師父的功德,甚為殊偉。
7. Even a practitioner who is utmost in keeping the pure precepts cannot match the attainments of an attendant who serves the guru wholeheartedly. Even if the attendant has no time to cultivate, the attendant nevertheless still receives special merit from the guru.
八、弟子犯錯,被師父責罵是應該的。弟子若犯三昧耶戒,則有金剛神執戒,令犯戒弟子臨終墮入金剛地獄。
8. When a student is at fault, he or she deserves to be reprimanded by the guru. If the student breaches the samaya pledge, the precepts, being overseen and enforced by wrathful gods, shall punish the student upon his death and send him to vajra hell.
九、師尊常以根本上師為頂飾,每次說法均先頂禮傳承上師,即得加持傳法開示,否則,其說法將無益於眾生。
9. Grandmaster always keeps the image of his root guru above his head, and always pays homage to the lineage gurus prior to giving discourse for their blessings. If I did not, then my discourse shall not benefit sentient beings.
十、凡認為自己法力第一,功德第一,智慧第一的行者,認為自己成就非凡而忘卻根本傳承者,此人早已被魔挾持。
10. A practitioner who considers himself to have reached the pinnacle in spiritual power, merit and wisdom and prides himself on his great spiritual attainment – yet forgets his root lineage – such a person has long been possessed by demonic forces.
